Berta Rojas is one of the most active and original guitarists of the international musical scene. The Latin-American matrix of her discography reaches its ultimate consecration with this album. We are before a truly beautiful work which renders homage to the boundless Brazilian musical legacy.
The magic and power of the tracks is highlighted by the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional del Paraguay, conducted by Popi Spatacco, who is also the musical arranger and producer of the album.
The strongest aspect of Felicidade is obviously the international nature of the different guests, from Ivan Lins to Toquiño, whose rendering alongside Rojas of ”Odeon” by Ernesto Nazareth is a rare and memorable performance. Their delivery of the splendid ”Berimbau” by Baden-Powell and Vinicious de Moraes is also stunning, while ”Mis Noches Sin Ti” by Demetrio Ortiz has a poignant quality: it was performed with Gilberto Gil, a legend of Brazilian music, and the vocal harmonies which were carried out in this track are a mark of true genius. Homage is duly paid to Egberto Gismonti with ”Agua y Vino”, to Villa Lobos with ”Choro Tipico”, to Hermeto Pascoal with ”Bebe”, and to Antonio Carlos Jobim with ”Desafinado”.
The album has an excellent sound and overall balance in which the guitar is the main character, its timbre rich with subtle shades notwithstanding the important presence of the orchestra.
In short, Felicidade is surely a unique piece of work, successfully thought out, performed and assembled in order to reach not only fellow musicians, but indeed the general public.
