The LHC is designed to create new particles from the energy of proton collisions — consistant with Einstein's E = mc2 equation — with the particle of greatest interest being the Higgs boson. In quantum theory, and especially in the theory of elementary particles, there are additional symmetries and conservation laws, some exact and others only approximately valid, which play no significant role in classical physics.
