They confronted Marvel and asked for more royalties. But, the comic creators weren't going to take this quietly. They rebelled by founding their own comic company! This was Image Comic (in case you didn't guess). The original line-up was Todd McFarlane (known for working on Spider-Man), Jim Lee (X-men), Rob Liefeld (X-Force), Marc Silvestri (Wolverine), Erik Larsen (The Amazing Spider-Man), Jim Valentino (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Whilce Portacio (Uncanny X-Men) Cowboys and Aliens. They held firm so they could tell stories of their own heroes; heroes with big guns and metal limbs and superfluous spikes and flowing capes and massive shoulder pads and gritted teeth and giant fins. In doing so, they kicked open the door for new generations to tell new kinds of stories, and kicked off a comic book revolution Supreme (Vol. 2 #29). In recent years, major comics publishers have aimed to make real strides in character diversity. Marvel, for example, has introduced a half-black/half-Puerto Rican Spider-Man (Miles Morales); a black Captain America (formerly the Falcon/Sam Wilson); and a female Thor. DC Comics has made similar advances with such existing characters as Green Lantern John Stewart, and by introducing Batwing (a black member of Batman’s team of crimefighters) during the debut of the New 52, and announcing that there will be a black Power Girl (Tanya Spears) Citizen Jack #1 Cover B Zdarksy.
